In NIOH, Prepare to Die… But as a Samurai, One Does not Fear Death

In many games your character’s death might seem like the end, only for you to respawn at a checkpoint hoping to get revenge on the adversary that killed you. What if I told you that death is not the end but merely a different beginning? Well that is the exact type of experience you will find when playing the new Action RPG Nioh coming to PlayStation 4 in February 2017.

Nioh is set in 16th century Japan during the Sendoku period where you will battle a variety of monsters and enemies that will surely put your skills and patience to the test. You will play the role of western samurai William Adams loosely based on the real historical figure. Adams was one of the first Englishmen to travel to Japan where he advised Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu on the construction of the first western style designed Japanese Ships. He also established trade routes with the west eventually becoming one of the few Westerners to be granted the honor of the title Samurai and was deeply respected in Japan.

In the game, William will once again meet Tokugawa Ieyasu where they will form a partnership in William’s quest to find a personal enemy and to rid Japan of Yokai (demons) that have been devastating the region. This hack and slash adventure has been heavily compared to Dark Souls in both its combat style and the unforgiving strength of your enemies. You will engage these enemies with katanas, polearms, axes, and magic.

One wrong move can very well cost you the battle so prepare to die a lot because it will be inevitable. Once you respawn you will only have one chance to reclaim the XP you have lost before it is gone forever. One noticeable difference from the Souls game is that missions in Nioh are selected from a menu instead of wandering around an open world environment. While the mission will be difficult, the player will have a deep sense of satisfaction once they are able to complete them.

The developers Team Ninja has given the following statement about their game, “Nioh will challenge players in a way that makes every mission and accomplishment feel earned and worthwhile.”
